Group Psychotherapy
People are often apprehensive about group therapy and for good reasons. Sometimes people are registered for groups that do not address their problems due to inadequate screening. Because the demand for mental health services exceeds the supply, groups are often quite large, making it challenging for group facilitators to address individual needs, and depending on the group facilitator’s level of training and experience, they may or may not be equipped to address more complex mental health concerns. Here are the reasons why my groups are different:
You will receive a free 60-minute consultation to evaluate whether one of my groups is likely to benefit you. If you were referred to a group by another healthcare provider, the consultation may be shorter because initial screening has already occurred.
All groups are facilitated by me. I am a doctoral-level psychologist who has concentrated my career on assessing and treating complex mental health difficulties.
Group size will not exceed six people to ensure everyone receives individual attention.
All group members will have access to phone coaching between sessions. If you are having difficulty applying something you learned in group, you can call me, and I will help you.
Group Offerings
Registration is open for the following groups.
Find Your Anchor
Are your emotional storms intense? Do you have trouble grounding yourself amidst the storm? Maybe ‘typical’ coping strategies don’t work because you are too angry or anxious to use them? If so, this group may be for you. We will be taking an integrative approach, drawing primarily from dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), to help you find your anchor, so you can get your life back on track. This is a skills-based group, meaning you will be learning new ways of handling difficult thoughts, emotions, and situations. This group is intended to help you manage your distress more effectively right now.
Who is this group for? This group is appropriate for individuals who just received a ‘reality slap’ (i.e., those moments when reality hits you hard in the face and turns your life upside down), individuals who have limited funds for psychological services (making individual sessions less feasible), or those who are on a waitlist for individual psychotherapy but need help NOW.
